CARNIVAL FLY 1999 The No Limits Etna Center is once again organising Carnival Fly, the colorful flying pageant in the skies over Taormina, pearl of the Mediterranean. This year's Carnival - the fifth - will take place from 13 - 16 February 1999; taking off from Mount Venus (800 m) and from Gallodoro (450 m), pilots will fly over Castelmola, Taormina and Letojanni Village to land on the sandy beach at Letojanni in the province of Messina. Sicily. PAST EDITIONS 1995 saw the first ever Carnival Fly: the idea was to celebrate Carnival by flying our hang gliders and paragliders in costume and fancy dress. Organised by a small group of Sicilian pilots led by Angelo d'Arrigo (who holds several world records in microlights), and attended by Aircat, a world- renowned band of French pilots with their imaginative flying structures, the sky over Taormina was literally filed with colour for the duration of the manifestation. Building on the success of the first meeting, even more pilots from all over Europe came the next year, as did the late Patrick de Gayardon, the world-famous free fall parachutist. TV coverage was massive, with exceptional reports on both italian national (RAI) and international (RAI International) networks. National press coverage denominated it the "No Limts Carnival"; the costumed pilots, the flying structures, not to mention the sheer technical difficulty of launching some of the more bizarre creations, as well as the aerobatics of de Gayardon and d'Arrigo stunned the journalists who attended. The 1997 and 1998 editions of the manifestation confirmed its status as a major international event in its sector. THIS EDITION This year's edition (programme attached) will build on past succes. Over 100 pilots have already enrolled; nations already reoprensented include Japan, Russia, Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and so on. The Library in Taormina will host an exhibition of world-class aerial photography (6-16 Feb. 1999). All proceeds of the manifestation will be devolved to the charitable organisation BAMBINI IN EMERGENZA, which cares for Roumanian children who have been abbandoned because they have AIDS. The Italian TV presenter and journalist Mino D'Amato will host Carnival Fly. D'Amato is closely associated with the work of Bambini in Emergenza.
